September 7th – National Neither Snow Nor Rain Day & Grandma Moses Day

wpid-img_20140907_235707_2.jpgThe name is deceiving. Today isn’t about weather. Neither Snow Nor Rain is actually referring to the quote on this quote that is inscribed on the Main Building of the New York City Post Office.

“Neither snow nor rain not heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”

The New York Post Office opened on this day in 1914. Exactly 100 years ago. So much has changed! Now I can talk to me niece and nephews thousands of miles away through a video chat, but it’s always nice to get something handwritten in the mail. So I wrote them a little letter.

It’s been about two years since I stopped getting something in the mail regularly, because that’s how long it’s been since my Gran passed away. Still, when somebody tells me I’ve got mail, I have to remind myself that it won’t be from her.

I did get a surprise package from a friend this week in the middle of a frustrating day. It was awesome! So take a moment. Write a letter. Make someone feel special. Give them a letter or card that they can hold on to for years and read when they miss you. There’s no replacing that.

Today is also Grandma Moses Day. She is an artist who gained popularity later in life as an 80 year old. I enjoyed browsing through her work. The winter paintings got me excited for snow, but I decided I shouldn’t just gloss over Fall. So this is the one I’ve decided to share:

It’s called Halloween 1955.

I love the fall colors and that it reminds me of Ohio. A country life. Sometimes that life just seems so appealing.
