Today was fantastic. My sister and brother in law are in town and it was a perfect time to head over to Ellis Island. What a place.
We listened to an audio tour describing what it was like for the people as they came off the ships and were herded through the checkpoints before they could make their way to their final destinations. It’s staggering to think of the amount of people who came across this threshold, and the legacies they have left behind.
Unfortunately, Ellis Island was really damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, so there were many things that were not on display. They are still working to repair the damage.
One of the displays talked about many of the reasons why people left their homelands to come to America and make a new start. While this country presented so many opportunities, it must have been so scary. I get nervous now moving across the country. Just imagine a new country where you are all alone and never have the chance to go home. What a sacrifice these people made for their children and future generations. Wonderful.
It was nice to spend time there, and great to spend it with family.
Unfortunately we didn’t have time to make it to the Statue of Liberty today. That’s an adventure for another time.
