This Monday our schools will be out for Columbus Day to celebrate the man who discovered the Americas. Today is National Leif Erikson Day. Today celebrates the man who was here nearly 500 years before Columbus.
While some believed that the colony he founded (Vinland) may have been near Boston, it seems to be more accurate that it was in Canada. October 9th was chosen to be Leif Erikson Day because it marks the first organized immigration to the US from Norway on the ship Restauration.
Quite unfortunately, there is no statue to honor Leif in New York City. So, to celebrate today, we decided to eat pumpkin pie and talk about what we’re thankful for.
It may be a stretch, but Columbus-America-Thanksgiving-Pumpkin Pie. It makes sense to me!
What’s tomorrow:
- National Angel Food Cake Day
- International Stage Managers Day
