October 10th – International Stage Manager’s Day

It’s a crazy life. I’m on a constant job hunt for work that doesn’t pay all that well, but requires me to live in the most expensive cities in the world. I say goodbye to friends and coworkers just when we are really starting to settle into a groove. The hours are ridiculous. I work 6 days a week, mostly in the evenings, and almost every holiday. My friends can go months without seeing me, and my family follows me on social media to remember what I look like.

And yet, this is the life I choose. I love the camaraderie that comes with working in this business. I’m grateful for working relationships that make me cry when saying goodbye to someone I met 2 months ago. The hours will always be ridiculous, but I can get lunch with a friend on Thursday at 2pm and rarely have to wake up before 7. It’s always changing, evolving, and growing. So am I.

Getting bored is impossible because these people, and this work.

I have a Job Interview Playlist that I use much more often than most people should. I travel. I meet people. And every now and then, I get to work on a show that matters. The kind of show that changes the way I think or see the world. And then the job hunt, and penny pinching, and goodbyes seem like it’s all worth it. And I’m glad that this is the life I chose.
