February 17th – National Random Acts of Kindness Day

I live in New York City. For me, one of the most surprising things about this city is the community and how friendly and helpful people are. We all expect to get to New York and have to deal with people being angry, stressed, and rushed all the time. Angry/stressed/rushed exists, but the friendliness is there as well.

Today I had a commute to work and back. During that time, I tried to find any instances where I could perform a small act of kindness. Pausing that extra moment to hold open a door, or warning a fellow commuter of a very badly smelling subway car. Unfortunately there wasn’t a mom carrying a stroller out of the subway like there usually is when I’m looking for service opportunities. Still, I felt much more a part of my community as I looked for ways to serve.

Along with my very small acts, I was also able to witness some others. It always warms my heart when people on the train give their seat to someone who needs it more. Then, there was the man who stopped his brisk walk to help another guy light his cigarette. No lighter, just cigarette to cigarette. I was also notified that a meal of mine was paid for by the parents of someone working on our production (I work in theatre).

These things would have happened anyway. These things happen every day. Yet, because today is Random Acts of Kindness day, I see it more. Just another day to be grateful for things I see and experience all the time. Come to New York. Our friendliness really might surprise you.

What’s Tomorrow?
