February 28th – National Sleeping in Public Day

I had a fun little photo session on the way home from work tonight. Haha, you should have seen how many fake sleeping pictures I took! I just got lucky because the train was mostly empty so nobody was watching me.

For Public Sleeping Day, I am going to share two stories.

Sleeping On The Train

When I had only been in New York a couple of months, I was working on a show rehearsing down on 42nd Street. The commute to my house from there was only about 30 minutes on the train, but in the weeks leading up to opening I was not getting much sleep at all. Because of this, I found it nearly impossible to stay awake on that train ride. It’s actually pretty nice to be able to sleep on your commute. I still do it all the time.

One night I got on the train, turned on Alanis Morissette Jagged Little Pill, and closed my eyes. What seemed like just moments later, I opened my eyes. Not only were we at my stop, but the doors were already open.

I jumped up and got out of the car just as the doors were closing. I imagine it was quite impressive to see.

There are a lot of different theories on what happens to you to become a “true New Yorker.” Some people have told me that this was my moment. I’m not sure I agree, but sometimes it’s nice to pretend that I’ve already had my moment and can call myself a real New Yorker now.

Sleeping In The Park

Embarrassing confession: I snore.

I once had a chunk of time before a rehearsal in midtown. It was a very beautiful day and I found myself in Bryant Park.

Bryant Park on beautiful days is so crowded. Too crowded.

Still, I found a little piece of grass for myself and lay down. It wasn’t long before I was asleep. So, back to the snoring issue. Sometimes I wake myself up with my snoring. That happened on this day. I was sleeping pleasantly in the sun, then woke myself up with my snoring. When I woke up, I looked around at the MANY people surrounding me.

More than a few of them were looking at me.

No big deal.

Awkward.

I don’t think I was much of a public sleeper before I moved to New York. I wonder if public sleeping makes you a real New Yorker.

There was a moment during my photo session on the train today that I was worried the guy in front of me might think I was taking pictures of him. When I looked up to see if he did, this is what I saw.

So. Ya. I guess I actually was taking pictures of him. #SleepingInPublic

A lot of of the things you mention is supprisingly legitimate and that makes me wonder why I had not looked at this with this light previously. This article really did turn the light on for me as far as this specific topic goes. But at this time there is actually just one point I am not really too comfy with and while I try to reconcile that with the actual central theme of your position, permit me observe just what all the rest of the subscribers have to say.Well done.
