As part of the celebrations for the 150th Anniversary, the New York City Fire Department opened their stations to the public. While I do have a lot more interaction with the NYPD than Firefighters, these men and women are a part of daily life here in New York. They run directly in to danger when everyone else is running away, and knowing that they are around makes me feel safe.
Being there helped me connect with my community, which is difficult to have when you live in New York and don’t have kids in schools or go to local bars or the church on the corner. I assume the FDNY knew this. I watch Chicago Fire. I know how much they want the community to trust them.
Today was cool.
