August 20th – National Radio Day

Radio Day

I started off today’s celebration by using the clock radio in my apartment to wake me up. Instead of a beeping alarm, I woke up to country music. The morning was so much less stressful as I lay in bed listening to the morning show while I gradually willed myself awake. It took me back to my childhood when I would sleep in my Grandma’s bed at her house in Idaho. Every morning she would wake up to the radio and while she was getting ready for the day I would lay in bed and listen to these two guys talk about which tractor was better, or the best pesticide for your crops.

I completed today’s celebration by listening to This American Life’s 100th show from April 1998, which was about the medium of the radio. When I got home from work, I went and sat in the outdoor patio and I listened. I’m a little bit tired and a little bit stressed, but sitting outside with my feet up on a nice night with a gentle breeze was…perfect.

I can see why people have done this for years. Sit on the front porch, watch the world go by, and listen to the radio. If you are like me, you may not remember the last time you’ve done this. I encourage you to give it a try.

“There is just something about radio. It’s more personal.” – Ira Glass

Sidenote: I really didn’t want today to be another selfie, but it was just too dark for anything else. Apologies.
