September – National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Today was the day! If you’ve been following along, you know that I have been fundraising for children’s cancer research through St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This morning I went to the salon (Dino Palmieri) with 3 very good friends, for the experience of a lifetime.

Lisa and Maureen were the photographers, and Michael was a fellow hair donator. He didn’t shave his head, but he sacrificed 12 inches.

My awesome stylist was Vanessa. She was interested in my story, constantly aware of my emotions, and very patient with all the photos we were taking. She even contributed to the fundraiser.

I really couldn’t have asked for a better support team. Here’s a short video of the morning’s adventures. I was scared. That’s very plain to see.

My goal at the beginning of this was to raise $1,000 for children’s cancer research, create some awareness, and donate my hair to Wigs For Kids. As of this moment, I have raised $1,280.

I already know that shaving my head will teach me a lot of things. Maybe the first lesson is that sometimes, other people’s opinions just don’t matter. In some cases, you get to do whatever you want.

I am blessed and lucky to have such wonderful friends and family that have been so supportive during this whole thing, both financially and emotionally. Shaving off all of my hair was a little bit scary, but you made me feel beautiful.
